I’m a research assistant in a neurogenetics lab studying Alzheimer’s Disease. I use drosophila (fruit flies) as a functional model for studying important genes in Alzheimer’s. Basically, we induce flies to have Alzheimer’s, then express and inhibit certain genes along with the disease. I then cut and stain their brains for proteins, to see if these genes enhanced or repressed the pattern of degeneration seen in Alzheimer’s. Whew, that sounds confusing. It’s great, I love my job, and I can tell a male fruit fly from a female one. Coolest party trick ever (if you’re at a party infested by fruit flies…).
